Abstract

Waste pickers are an informal worker group vulnerable to skin disorders due to direct exposure to waste containing chemicals, microorganisms, and dirt. These skin disorders can reduce quality of life and work productivity. This study aims to identify factors associated with occupational skin disorders among waste pickers in Kampar Regency. This study uses a cross-sectional design to analyze factors related to occupational skin disorders in waste pickers in Kampar Regency. Data were collected once through interviews and direct examination of the waste pickers’ skin condition. The study sample was selected purposively, including waste pickers aged 18 years and above who have worked for at least 6 months. A total of 100 respondents were included. Data were collected using a questionnaire containing questions about length of work, daily working hours, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and personal hygiene. In addition, a simple physical examination was conducted to detect any skin disorders. The results showed that the prevalence of occupational skin disorders among waste pickers in Kampar Regency was quite high, at 45%. Factors significantly associated with skin disorders include length of work, daily working hours, use of PPE, and personal hygiene. Waste pickers with more than 5 years of work experience, working more than 8 hours per day, not routinely using PPE, and having poor personal hygiene have a higher risk of developing skin disorders.
